Introduction to Etching

This is an introductory class Appropriate for students of all backgrounds and experiences. We'll cover basic mark-making skills as well as etching press operation. Participants will use traditional etching grounds and resists to etch copper plates in a ferric chloride solution. Also we will teach you ink mixing and application, plate preparation, wiping, paper tearing, and registration.

Students' specific interests will guide the Demonstrations, and there will be time for each participant to work on an single project.

Supplies to bring to the first class:
-18-gauge copper plates (you can choose size, but do not Exceed 10 "x 10"), the RISD 3D we suggest store on N Main St.
-Two sheets of paper BFK Rives ( Utrecht, Jerry's, Paperworks, RISD Store)
-medium etching needle, or RISD Store Utrecht
-Drypoint scribe, Utrecht or RISD Store
-Scraper, Utrecht or RISD Store
-Burnisher (we prefer curved) Utrecht or RISD Store

Location and Parking
The AS220 Community Printshop at the Mercantile is located at 131 Washington Street in Providence, RI. The shop's entrance is located at the back of the building on Lucie Way; the shop's double doors are at the Northwest corner of the building. There is 2-hour metered on-street parking available, but is free on Sundays! Also we are located near a parking garage with Entry on Washington Street, look for the big blue parking sign.

Class Policies Important 
Please be as respectful of the short time you and the other Participants Have to learn and be on time as well as possible. If you arrive more than half an hour late we will not be Able to teach you what you signed up for. Please plan ahead, it always Takes Time to find on-street parking.  To cancel your registration, you must email one week in advance, or risk losing your payment.

If minimum number is not met enrollment in class, the teacher May opt to cancel class. If this is the case, we will give a full refund of payment and first class choice to enroll in future classes. We will Attempt to give as much notice as possible.
