Learn to use the largest press in Rhode Island.

Sundays in April, dates TBD

The goal of this class is to learn how to operate and print on the large Takach etching press. This class is ideal for intermediate to advanced level printmakers that have experience in either monotype, etching, or relief. Familiarity with a traditional etching press is required.
This class will be held over two consecutive Sundays.  During the first class we will focus on learning the technical characteristics of the press.  We will go over the set up of the compressor, how to adjust pressures for different types of plates, substrate set ups, blankets, drying rack, and clean up. We will print sample etching, relief and monotype plates and go over damp packs for large paper.  During the second class everyone will have the opportunity to make and print a largemonotype.
At the end of this class you will be qualified for one complementary block of time with a certified large press instructor.  You will have 6 months to use this block before the time expires.  This class is a pathway to certification for using the press and certification will be granted on a case by case basis.

Instructors:  Kate Aitchison and Allison Bianco.

Kate Aitchison’s artwork focuses on human interventions in the natural landscape especially those related to watersheds and dams.  Her most recent work, River Mile Zero (ii) is a five panel monotype printed on the large Takach press at AS220, which is currently on display at the Granoff Center at Brown University.

Allison Bianco is a printmaker who uses a combination of intaglio and screen print to depict landscapes diminished by massive oceans and infinite skies. Recent works include the expansive Pouring on Jamestown, that pictures the eastern side of Conanicut Island in Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, diminished by a massive expanse of ocean below. Pouring on Jamestown was printed on the large Takach press at AS220 Community Printshop.
