Visual Storytelling: Comic Book Artists & Illustrators

Any pro will tell you the road to becoming a better cartoonist or illustrator is storytelling. The art forms are all about conveying a narrative. This workshop is a perfect crash course for anyone wanting to learn how to make comics, graphic novels or illustrations that speak to a viewer. Whether it's start forward, abstract, traditional or digital, all the basics will be covered in this intensive class. This workshop is geared for ages 13 and up.
This visual narrative workshop is the perfect way to craft your own visual voice, dialog and becoming a better visual storyteller. You’ll leave with a better understanding of basic narrative either through a panel-to-panel comic or stand alone illustrations. Instructor Steve Mardo will guide students through the process of making visually intriguing images that tell a short story. The class will help develop and nurture your skills and problem solving abilities. Style, technique and reference to golden age and current illustrators and comic book artists will be the focus and practice. Expect guest speakers and in-class exercises! We end with going over publishing and submitting your work online and beyond to help build your audience and/ or business.
Instructor : Steve Mardo is a freelance illustrator from Rhode Island who has studied
at the School of Visual Arts in New York and received his BFA in illustration from MassArt in Boston. Clients include American Cancer Society, Northeastern Magazine, Dig Boston, The Pet Gazette, The Motif Magazine, Light Publications, Locust Moon Comics, Hope Media, Middle Center Productions, Improper Bostonian, Rhode Island Monthly. His art has also been showcased at Gallery X, AS220, 13 Forest Gallery, AnnMarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center and Gallery 1988. Location and Parking: The AS220 Media Arts Lab at the Mercantile is located at 131 Washington Street Providence, Rhode Island on the 2nd floor (# 202). On-street parking is free after 6pm and we are located next to a parking garage with Entry on Washington Street.
Important Class Policies:Please be respectful of the short time you and the other Participants Have to learn, and arrive on time. If you are more than half an hour late, we will not be Able to teach you what you signed up for. Plan ahead, always it Takes Time to find on-street parking. To cancel your reservation, you must email firstname.lastname@example.org at least two weeks in advance, or risk losing your payment.
CANCELLATION OF CLASSES: If minimum number is not met enrollment in class, the teacher may opt to cancel class. If this is the case, we will give a full refund of payment and first class choice to enroll in future classes. We will attempt to give as much notice as possible.
